　　Chinese President Hu Jintao on Wednesday expressed his 'deep condolences' over the death of a Chinese UN observer killed in an Israeli air raid on a UN post in south Lebanon.

　　President Hu “demanded the Chinese departments concerned properly handle the aftermath of the incident and take every measure necessary to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in Lebanon，” said the statement from Chinese Foreign Ministry.

　　很多时候，“在汉语上下功夫”才是中英文互译的突破口。要译好“善后”，得首要理解“善后”的含义——灾变丧乱后，妥善处理遗留问题。单词aftermath指“the result following a bad event such as an accident or war”（由事故或战争而导致的结果），很确切地表达了汉语“余秧，余波”的内涵。

　　由此，“善后” 的相应英文表达就是“to properly handle the aftermath of the accident”。新闻中，由上下文，accident可用incident（空袭这一事件）来代替。另外，handle和deal with做“处理”时也可互换。
