From early times, man has been interested in art. People have often worked together to collect and save the world’s art treasures.

Fine art treasures from many countries are kept in an art museum called the Louvre(卢浮宫) in Paris, France. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries. It is the biggest art museum in the world.

The Louvre has not always been a museum. The first building was a fort(堡垒). In 1190, it was the king’s castle with high walls and a round tower. It had a moat(护城河) to keep out the enemies.

Over the years, the number of buildings around the castle grew. By 1350, the castle no longer needed a fort. The Louvre became a palace home for French kings and queens.

During time of peace, new treasures were brought in. During the days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged.

When Francis I became king of France in 1515, he brought in many artists from other countries. One of the artists was Leonardo Da Vinci from Italy. Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is the best known painting in the museum today.

I always feel sorry for world leaders busy dealing with fights between nations. When my three children were young, most days it was hard to keep my house from becoming a battlefield.

It got worse as they grew older. Three years ago, Zack, then 16, couldn’t make it through a day without making his sisters, Alex 11 and Taryn 9, angry.

My husband and I tried to be understanding the boy at such an age. We reasoned, punished, and left heartfelt notes on his bed about how he was hurting our family. His answer was “I say it because it’s true.”

I even tried telling the girls to fight back. Bad idea. Now I had three children at war. Whatever I said to them, they paid no attention. When there was no way out, I told everything to my sister in an e-mail. She replied, “Don’t e-mail me. E-mail him.”

Our son was online every day, mailing and talking with his friends. Maybe he would actually hear me this way. I didn’t say anything different, but e-mail just took the tension(紧张) away. There’d be no shouting or door banging. Zack wouldn’t feel under attack.

Zack didn’t reply for days. When he finally did, his entire message was four small words. I smiled when I read them, “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

The children still fought, of course, but Zack changed. Best of all, I now have a better way to talk with not one but three of them. I like it that they don’t tune me out as much as they used to. They like not having to listen to me shouting to them. Or as Alex says, “You’re so much nicer online.”

All I know is that the house is quiet. But we’re talking.

It seems that great artists and scientists often suffer from mental(精神的) problems. Both Einstein and Dickens had mental illness. Now scientists have started to look at whether mental illness and genius(天才) are linked(联系).

Dr. Adele Juda studied 5,000 creative people in Germany. She found there were more people with mental illness in this group than in the general population. Poets had the highest rate(比例) of mental illness, followed by musicians, with lower numbers for painters and architects.

Other scientists did research which also showed a strong link between mental problems and creativity. But, it did nothing to explain it.

Dr. Ruth Richards of Harvard University made a breakthrough. Instead of studying creative people, she took a group of psychiatric(精神病的) patients and tested them for creativity. The patients got much higher scores than a normal group.

Also, the patients’ close relatives were much more creative than the patients and a normal group. This suggests that the key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes(基因).

But this is a problem. According to Darwinism, harmful genes should be removed. Some scientists believe that evolution(进化) has created a balance, where the madness of a few people leads to the development of the whole human race.

Geniuses may be mad, bad or just difficult to understand, but their discoveries have improved the world we live in. It seems that a little creative madness is good for us all.

72. According to Dr. Adele Juda, which of the following group has the lowest rate of mental illness?

  A. Painters.                       B. Musicians.                 C. Poets.                D. Bus drivers.

73. The underlined phrase “made a breakthrough” in the fourth paragraph means _________.

  A. discover or find something new and important

  B. make a way through using force

  C. (of the sun or moon) appear from behind (clouds)

  D. suddenly change (from a slower to a faster pace)

74. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

  A. Among the 5,000 creative people in Germany, more people suffer from mental diseases than the general population.

  B. There is a strong link between mental problems and creativity.

  C. Psychiatric patients make greater contributions than common people.

  D. The key to the link between creativity and mental illness is in our genes.

75. What is the writer’s attitude toward madness?

  A. Madness is harmful to the whole society.

  B. A little creative madness is good for us all.

  C. All the talented people are mad.

  D. Only the people with mental illness have more creativity.
