READ THE TEXT AND THENANSWER THE QUESTIONS FOLLOWING THE TEXT
Whatare the advantages and disadvantages of *monolingual and * bilingualdictionaries?
*Monolingual = using onelanguage e.g. an English-English dictionary
*Bilingual = using twolanguages e.g. an English-Chinese dictionary
Both monolingual and bilingualdictionaries help in understanding a foreign language but there can be littledoubt that a bilingual dictionary makes fewer demands on the user. With a monolingual dictionary, the student isforced to use the language in order to understand it and there is of course noguarantee that either the definitions or the examples will be understood. The bilingual dictionary, however, will givethe student a similar word, or words in his own language. A good bilingual dictionary should supplyenough information to allow the students to translate from one language toanother reasonably well. A bad bilingualdictionary should at least help them part of the way. When students are trying to expressthemselves in the second language, when writing a letter or an essay forexample, a monolingual dictionary will be of little help. Users of the monolingual dictionary canaccess the material in it only by means of the foreign language ‘headword’ (theword in darker print, which heads the dictionary explanation). It may be that the headword is the word theydo not know. If that is the case thereis no way out of their difficulty.
Consequently, there can be littlesurprise at the reluctance of most students to reach for a monolingualdictionary if there is a bilingual at hand. Yet, while students prefer bilingual dictionaries, their teachers aretrying to encourage them to use monolinguals. The teachers feel that monolinguals are good for you and bilinguals arenot, rather like brown bread and green vegetables being good for you, whilesugar and fatty foods are not, although you may like them better.
Perhaps this simile is more apt than itseems. Students like bilingualdictionaries because they bring instant satisfaction while teachers prefermonolingual dictionaries for their long term benefits.
One further point on this subject; thereis, in the English-speaking world a fairly rigid distinction betweenmonolingual and bilingual learners’ dictionaries. This is not the case in other areas, in Italy forexample, ‘hybrid dictionaries’, in other words dictionaries with both bilingualand monolingual features, are considered normal.
This is perhaps the direction in whichEnglish learners’ dictionaries should be moving. If the best features of the monolingual andbilingual dictionaries could be combined it would produce a much more flexiblelearning aid, which could be produced in book form as well as beingelectronically accessible.
There are many ways in which these typesof dictionary could be combined. Monolingual dictionaries, for example could include some explanationwritten in the learner’s own language. Bilingual dictionaries might benefit from several examples and possibleeven grammatical explanations not written in the learner’s own language. With the technology of today’s dictionaries, more advanced users might be able to switch from bilingual to monolingualexplanations within the same dictionary.
In my view, the main question we shouldbe asking is what we want the dictionary to do for us. It is not, after all, a language learningcourse book. You don’t expect to open adictionary and proceed to learn the language from cold. However, a good monolingual must do more thansimply convey to the users the meaning of the words they come across in theirreading and a good bilingual dictionary must do more than just make translationeasy.
How much then is it reasonable to expectof a dictionary? Clearly, it must beaccurate in what it includes and give full definitions and explanations of thewords it chooses to include. The bookitself must be easy to read and reasonable priced. In addition, it must do as much as possibleto provide users not only with what they know they want, but with what theydon’t know they want as well. Alearner’s dictionary, which offers a student a word without telling them how touse it, is a dangerous thing in a classroom.
Above all, a good dictionary must behonest in its presentation of the language.
Presenting facts in a way which might bemisleading to the learner must be avoided at all times even if this means areduction in the range of vocabulary the dictionary can cover. Many lexicographers** have tried to includeas much information as they can in every line of the dictionary. This often results in an entry so dense as tobe incomprehensible. Generations ofdictionary users have felt that they are to blame when their struggles tounderstand the dictionary entry are unsuccessful. Let’s get it clear: if students use theirdictionary carefully and intelligently, and still make mistakes, then there isnothing wrong with the students. Thereis a great deal wrong with the dictionary.
**Lexicographers = writers ofdictionaries.
