Chinanews, Urumqi, February 12 - (Written by Wang Jinsheng) Urumqi Observatory confirmed on February 11 that a new world-class observatory might be built at Kalasu Astronomical Observation Point in Taxkorgan County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Taxkorgan is located on the Pamirs Plateau, about 4,000 m above sea level, a remote paradise for astronomical observation, where it is free from the light pollution of cities.
“Investigation on the siting of the observatory was started 3 years ago, and Tibet, Qinghai and Yunnan have been selected as candidates, too, ” said Dr. Wang Na, the director of Urumqi Observatory.
“It will be the highest located astronomical observatory if Kalasu is finally selected, ”said Wang. Urumqi Observatory is responsible for checking the statistics of the candidates, and it has sent 3 researchers to take part in the project.
