M: Hello. International Friends Club. Can I help you? W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more. M: Yes, certainly, well, we’re a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club—we have about 50 members at the moment, but we’re growing all the time. W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports, and we also have language evenings. W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings ? M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practise their language—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come. W: Well, that sounds great. Hello, everyone. I’d like to tell you a story about Miss Richards. Miss Richards was a teacher at a school for boys and girls. She taught chemistry and physics from the lowest to the highest classes in the school. One year, the first class had been studying chemistry for several weeks when Miss Richards suddenly asked, “What is water? Who knows? Put up your hands.” There was silence for a few seconds, and Miss Richards felt sad but then one boy raised his hand. “Yes, Dick?” said Miss Richards encouragingly. He was not one of the brightest students in the class, so she was glad this boy could answer. “Water is a liquid which has no color until you wash your hands in it, then it turns black,” the boy replied. |
