　　 A written test for Little Mayor candidates unveiled a disturbing fact: Guanzhou students don’t know much about their city or country.

　　Guanzhou students regularly take part in the competition, which gives them the chance to find out what it is like to be a government official for the day.

　　Contestants first have to take a written test but officials were disappointed this year by what they found out.

　　Most contestants got 60 to 80 marks and some failed the exam Saturday, which was set to check students’ knowledge about the city and the current affairs.

　　One student thought the People’s Republic of China was “40,000 square kilometers” in size. Other students made many wild guesses instead of the accurate 9.6 million square kilometers. Some students didn’t know when Hong Kong returned to the motherland.

　　Teachers said the results showed students’ narrow range of knowledge and indifference to news media, causing a shortage of necessary life skills.
