My Unique Approach of Reading Newspapers（CET英语）

In the process of learning English，Ihave experimented various methods．Through trial and error，I decided on one approach—improving English through reading newspapers，which proves to be successful． Here I’d like to share my experience with you．
Take 21st Century as an example．In this most popular newspaper with college students，my favorite pages range from Forum，Perspective to Lifestyle，Society and Campus Life．When it comes to each passage，I read in different ways．As for some light reading，I will only get sketchy information．And the in-depth report or analysis will be dealt with in five specific steps as follows．
First，I am used to scanning the whole passage to get the overall information．In this step，fast reading strategies are adopted and sharpened．Frankly speaking，as a special prize winner of this year’s and last year’s National English Contest for College Students，I benefit a lot from regular training in reading newspaper articles．
Then，cracking unknown words and set phrases is a time-and-energy-consuming task，yet it is worthwhile of the endeavors．Usually，I would guess the meaning of new words from context．By keeping a dictionary at hand，I frequently consult the dictionary to locate the exact meaning of new words or new meaning of familiar words．These measures work in expanding my vocabulary．
Next，to drill sentence patterns is essential．By analysing and understanding long and complicated sentences，Imay be better aware of the inner structureof sentences and implied complex logic．
The fourth step is selecting well-organized and expressive paragraphs or sentences for writing practice．Many newspaper articles themselves are perfect writing models．I learn a variety of writing techniques from journalists．The authentic，idiomatic and meaningful expressions enrich my composition．
Last but not the least，great importance is attched to cultural differences．In intercultural communication，even if one acquires language knowledge and skills，there still exists one obstacle—cultural gap．Due to diverse cultural backgrounds，the language systems may reflect subtle cultural differences in ways of thinking and expressing．Therefore，trying to bridge cultural gap is a must for me in reading newspapers．
According to my own experience，there is no shortcut in improving reading comprehension ability． Some of my peers imagine to master reading skills overnight．Well，“Rome was not built in a day”．What we need is down-to-earth attitude and scientific approach．I wish what I introduced above would give you a brand-new outlook．
