Haste Makes Waste
1、 为什么"欲速则不达"?
2、 举例说明。
By "Haste makes waste" is meant that one should do everything step by step. Even simple operations can easily be spoiled if we rush to complete them, neglecting important stages in the process. One should make full preparations before beginning any task.
Take English study for example. Without a good command of pronunciation, we can never hope to speak in an understandable way. Similarly, if we do not learn to spell properly and to acquire a basic grasp of grammar, we will never succeed in writing good compositions.
In short, laying a solid foundation is essential if we want to make achievements in our studies or work, or indeed in any other aspect of our lives. At every step, review what has been achieved and assess the problems ahead before moving to the next step. And remember ,Rome was not built in a day.
No pains no gains

My View on Fake Commodities
1、 假冒伪劣商品的危害
2、 怎样杜绝假冒伪劣商品
Like most people, I welcomed the advent of the market economy. Nevertheless, it must be admitted that, along with the benefits of the market economy, have come problems. In my opinion, the biggest problem is the large number of fake and shoddy goods, which are found all over the country and do great harm to society.
Fake and shoddy goods are harmful on two levels. Some people think that the quickest way to make profits is by selling poor-quality commodities, and this undermines the nation’s economy; at the same time, some fake and shoddy goods are bad for people’s health. This makes consumers distrust the sellers, and the free market in general.
In view of the seriousness of this problem, it is essential that laws and regulations be worked out to ban the manufacture and circulation of fake and shoddy goods. At the same time, consumers should be educated to identify sub-standard commodities. With proper laws and an alert public, it will only be a matter of time before fake and shoddy goods become things of the past.

Do "Lucky Numbers" Really Bring Good Luck?
There are people who believe that some numbers bring good luck, while others bring bad luck. For instance, in China the number eight is thought to be lucky. Turning our attention to the West, we find that the number seven is considered lucky, but the number 13 is avoided like he plague.
In spite of all these claims, most people would agree that there is little evidence hat numbers have any influence on our lives. In fact, they say, the reverse seems to be the case. For one thing, we might expect calculators to break don every time they note the number 13, and for another, although every week has seven days we know that not every week is lucky for us.
Weighing the pos and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the latter point of view. It is obvious that there is no scientific basis for the belief that there is a connection between luck and numbers. All in all, it seems to me to be superstition.

Reading Selectively Or Extensively?
Knowledge is power. Everbody knows it. The main way for us students to gain knowledge is from the books. So some students argue that we should read extensively in order to know something about everything, thus broadening our knowledge and enriching experience.
As books are of different kinds and have different content, so students argue that we should read those book which are of benefits both to our mind and body dismiss those which are of no good to us.
As far as I am concerned, I think we should selectively do extensive reading. Knowledge is limitless while life is short. So we should make full use our time to do the most effective reading and make the greatest to our motherland£?

How I Finance My College Education
With the rapid development of higher education in China, and more high school graduates admitted, universities can no longer be financed exclusively by the government and students must pay at least partly for their schooling.
There are various ways for a student to pay his tuition and fees. To begin with, if the student is quite excellent in his studies, he can apply for scholarship. Secondly, especially in China, he can always depend on his parents for all kinds of all kinds of expenditure, including living allowances, Then, he can choose to turn to the bank for a loan to pay his way through university, which he can repay after graduation. If he finds all the above not desirable, he still has another road to take- to do a part- time job and work his way through.
In my case, I am fortunate enough to be born into a Well-to-do family and have no difficulty having my parents pay for all my fees. But as a college&n

Is a Test of spoken English Necessary?
A test of spoken English will be included as optional component of the Collage Test (CET). We have all taken, and are thus familiar with, English tests of many kinds, but so far most of them are written ones. Have you any idea of what a spoke English test will be like, and is it necessary to go to all the trouble to hold or take such a test? People differ in their answers.
Many people will think it necessary. They know that although they have taken dozens, even hundreds, of English tests ever since they started learning is and many even have got surprisingly high marks, few of them can express themselves freely in spoke English. And if people can’t speak a word of it , what’s the sense of learning is and what do those high marks mean? They’re none but deaf-and-mutes before the native speakers. Furthermore, with so many college graduates and undergraduates having passed CET4 and CET6, a test of spoken English is a further way to tell the excellent from the not so excellent. Finally, it is viewed as new challenge to those who "live and learn".
There are, however, also people who think differently. Besides the pains in preparation for such a new kind of test, there is also the uncertainty about the reliability and objectivity of the marking system, which may depend mainly on human (and thus subjective) scoring instead of on machine scoring, as in the case of a standardized objective test such as CET4 and CET6.
At the prospect of this optional test, I feel encouraged and regard it as a welcome challenge and another opportunity to improve my language ability and career potentials. I am determined to practice my oral English more often, and if I am qualified for such a test, I will not hesitate a moment to apply for it .

How to Succeed in a Interview
Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview by both the employer and the applicant .The interview, so to speak, has become indispensable for getting a satisfactory job .On the one hand , the interviewer can take advantage of the occasion to learn about the candidates, such as their work experiences, education and their personalities, so as to pick out the right candidates for the company. On the other hand , the interviewee&

nbsp;can make use of the opportunity to get to know the job he is going to take up, the credibility of the firm to which he has applied, and the working conditions as well.
Essential as it is, the job interview is far from fearful. Well begun, half done. Excellent performance in it will enable the would-be employee to secure the job. But how can one succeed in it ?
First of all, the interviewee has to pay attention to his appearance . Though we can never judge a person by his appearance, the first impression is always where we start . Secondly, good manners are equally important. The interviewee has to be neither too proud nor timid. Just be courteous. Thirdly, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and knowledge about the job-related areas; he must express himself clearly and confidently. Last but not the least, the interviewee ought to be honest about his or her personal as well as academic background, for honesty is the best policy.
To sum up, the job interview is indeed important. There is no need to be nervous; however, if the interviewee has made full preparations for it and given a fairly confident and honest performance, his or her success can be ensured.

A letter to a Schoolmate
Dear Xiao Writing
I am delighted to know that you will be aboe to visit me for a week during the National Day holiday. I am looking forward to your visit to the opportunity to catch to. Welcome to my home in Nanjing!
As you know, Nanjing has many places of interest to see, to discover, and to enjoy. Among its historical sites are stone city wall, the Confucius Temple with its magnificent night view, and Dr. Sun Yetsen’s Mausoleum. With all its universitidw, Nanjing is a cultural center, offering an abundance of artistic and musical perormances. It’s also a city of beautiful gardens and parks, such as the Xuanwu Lake Park. With all these features, we will have a fun -filled week, especially that in early-October, there are many sunny and mild days for outdoor activities. So , I would suggest visiting these places first, and deciding on the others as our week develops.
Finally, since at this time of the year the weather gets a little chilly in the evening, I would suggest that you bring some warm clothing with you. Also, as there will be crowds of people at the stations and on the trains, you need to be very careful with your belongings!
Best wishes for a pleasant journey!

chool year is drawing to a close, I venture to write a letter to you about the canteen service on campus which has given rise o much complaint among students.
The focus of the hand grenades. They are too hard for us to chew. And the vegetables are so overcooked as to lose their nutrients. The fish and meat not given full measure. The only thing we are satisfied with the free soup. However, the price of food is surprisingly high. If we have 3 meals all in the Canteen, at least twelve yuan is gone to keep our body and soul together, As a result, many of us go out to have meals.
Honestly speaking, the dining environment has been improved, with the wall painted and some Chinese calligraphy works posted up. But there are only two canteens on the campus. As the number of students is ever increasing, there is not enough space and seats to allow us to have our meals there. The attitude of the service staff to the students is not hospitable at all.
All in all, there is still much room for improvement as far as the canteen service is concerned. I hope we will not suffer for another two year.
Best regards.

Student Use of Computers
As is shown in the chart, computers are becoming more and more popular with college students. In 1990, a college student spent an average of less than 2 hour on the computer a week, in 1995, he averaged 4 hours, but by 2000, the average number of hours he spent in front of the computer shot up to 20 hours per week, Computers have become something a college student cannot do without. Why has it gained so much dominance in his life?
There are many factors contributing to this development. Among other things, the rapid drop in the price and the simultaneous improvement in the functions made it possible for average students to afford the machine and for average collage and universities to be equipped with labs of computers. Besides, the wider and wider use the computer is now put to has made computers more and more indispensable in people’s daily life. In addition to their use in sience and technology, computers can now be used in education, business, amusement, communications and family budget. Students can have on -line lessons, talk with their distant friends, plays game, listen to music, watch films, look for reference materials, and indeed, do everything imaginable, through a computer. Finally, the development of the internet has given birth to thousands of net cafes (commonly known as net bars ) in every corner of every city throughout the world, thus providing the student with an access to computers.

They could hardly maintain a balance between study and play on the computer. Add they could hardly maintain a balance between study and play on the computer. And they could hardly rcsist the temptation of round-the-clock QQ chatting, which often leave them sleepy during the morning classes. It Pays to Be Honest
Nowadays, wherever you go, you will hear people complain about people’s dishonesty. On campus, people are talking about student’s cheating in exams; in job market, the employers are troubled with confusing false credentials; and in shopping areas, customers are worrying about the many fake commodities they can never protect themselves from buying. In a word, there is cheating and dishonest practice in every walk of our life.
Why is dishonesty so prevailing? There are, to my mind, plenty of contributing causes, among which the following ones are particularly worth mentioning. First, competition is always so fierce everywhere, from campus to company, and from job market to supermarket. Second, people are attaching too much importance to the improvement of their material life that they neglect the development of the spiritual and moral values, and consequently, they do a lot of things insensibly. And finally, we lack powerful and effective laws, rules and regulations to fight against this social problem.
It pays to be honest in the long run, and honesty will do good to both the honest people themselves and everybody else. To be exact, honesty will bring you friends and more business partners, and thus bring you happiness and fortune. Besides, to behave ourselves is to behave in an honest way. And what’s more, being honest is the essential step towards spiritual civilization. Therefore, let’s remember that"honest is always the best policy".

Changes of Ownership of Houses in China
It can be obviously seen from the chart above that our modern society has experienced a great change, and in the last decade, from 1990 to 2000, more and more people prefer private houses to state-owned ones.
There are a lot of reasons for it. First of all, state-owned houses lack the individualized characteristics, which are highly advocated in the modern&

nbsp;society today. In addition, The declining prices of the private houses, with the skyrocketing income of people in recent years, contribute to the increase of purchases of private houses because, after all, economy is the most basic factor each family or individual can decide on. At last, the purchases of private houses can entitle consumers to a more flexible selection in terms of location, house type and even the relevant service than that of its state-owned counterpart.
This phenomenon, in my opinion, has not only upgraded the quality and standard of life of people , but also improved the value of consumption of our modern society. And it is more significant that the phenomenon has formed a social atmosphere in our life in which everyone strives harder and harder for the sake of his life and future.

It can be discerned that the American students prefer to read the popular novel rather than other kind of books, such as the unpopular novel, the books of technology, poem and so on. The percentage of the popular novel currently is about 68.2%. Other kind of novels’ currently is, relatively, about 16.8%, 8.3%, and 5.2%.
It is not hard to think out why the popular novels can attract so many students. The popular novel is interesting, and not so abstract as books that full of the mathematic formulae. However, as university students, study is the first task for us to do. So we should pay more attention to the books about our major. Fictions may color our life, but it can not be the key part of our studying life.
Personally, I would like to spend my free time in reading books about my major, such as technology digests, computer newspaper... Because I want a good job in my subjects. Fortunately, my dreams come true, meanwhile, I ’ve gained other things--I have founded a solid basic knowledge about my major--make me feel easy to contrive the electronic circuit which have to be done during our bachelor years. Thanks to those books!

Reduce Waste on Campus

Such a phenomenon has brought many unfavorable consequences. To b

egin with, parents are the direct victims, because waste on campus means heavier financial burden for them to suffer. Second, it is also harmful to students themselves in that waste will foster lavish and lazy habits so as to affect their personality development. Last but not least, the extravagant atmosphere will come into being in universities as waste becomes more and more common, which, obviously, goes against the aim of university education.
It is high time that all of us joined in the efforts to battle this notorious phenomenon. As to me, I am determined to save on various resources such as
food, water and electricity. Moreover, I will try to reduce my living expenses so as to cultivate the habit of hardworking and thrifty. Only when every one of us realizes that thrifty is an indispensable virtue can we put an end to the
waste phenomenon.
