Chinanews, Shenzhen, Mar. 27 – In recent years the number of automobiles has increased rapidly in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, which has caused serious traffic jam and serious pollution. Xu Zongheng, Mayor of Shenzhen, called on the people last Thursday that people to slow down the pace of buying automobiles.
Xu said, the number of Shenzhen’s automobiles increased by 173 thousand in 2006, and now the city has more than 1 million automobiles. The total length of these automobiles if arranged bumper to bumper, will reach to 3,500 kilometers; While currently the total length of Shenzhen’s roads is only 3,100 kilometers. Meanwhile, the the rate of increase Shenzhen’s automobiles has hit 18.6% in recent years, which causing the current road system under heavy burden.
Many automobiles have also caused serious pollution, and 70% of Shenzhen’s pollution has come from automobiles. The problem is that while endeavoring to promote automobile industry, the government should also impose high tax on petroleum like Singapore does, Xu said.
Xu also reveals that the city will improve the public transit system and build 150-kilometer-long elevated railways, which will greatly improve the transportation conditions in the city.
