Chinanews, Shanghai, March 7 – Columbia, Universal, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, New Line Cinema, Disney and Warner Bro. Pictures have jointly brought a piracy case to the Intermediate People's Court of Shanghai, demanding 3-million-plus yuan worth of compensation.
Leying Home Video is the defendant of the case, for it sold pirated DVDs of The Lord of Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (by New Line Cinema), The Incredibles, National Treasure (both by Disney), and Before the Sunset (by Warner Bro.) to the staff members of the three companies last July.
Leying was adjudged to be guilty, and to pay 25,000 yuan to the three movie companies just mentioned above.
The other four movie companies also sued Leying for the same reason, and Chen Li, another pirated DVD dealer.
During the court session, Leying failed to present a representative, and didn't hand in a written reply, either. The court eventually pronounced the judgment by default.
