Chinanews, Shanghai, March 30 - Many young Shanghainese got married soon after they graduated from college, even before they could be financially independent at all. Scholars said that the young people must think carefully before getting married.
In Xuhui District Civil Affairs Administration alone, 1,221 college graduates aged between 22 and 24 registered for marriage in 2006, and the figure was only 809 in 2005.
"Though we are heading for a harmonious society, it is not right for young people to rely on their parents. They will never really grow up to be responsible members of the society if they keep on doing things like this," said Sun Baohong, vice director of the Institute of Adolescents of Shanghai Municipal Academy of Social Sciences.
"According to my investigation, most of these young people who got married soon after graduation from college are from relatively well-off families, and they all long for a stable and comfortable life. However, they still have a lot to learn before they are ready for marriage. In fact, many of them don't want others to know that they are married, which reflects their immaturity, " analyzed Sun.
