Chinanews, Shanghai, Dec. 16 - A good women should be adept at both work and household chores. When the popular saying was often used to praise a woman in the past, it now becomes a criterion that many men in Shanghai like to follow.
A recent survey about men's living conditions in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou reveals that 70% of the working males in Shanghai prefer to stay at home to become a "professional house husband." While the household chores might only include cooking meals in the past, the house husbands now bear nearly all the family burdens at home, important or trivial. And the trend has developed into a fashionable lifestyle in Shanghai.
Shanghai women are always well known for their astuteness in everything. This is also true on the issue of choosing their better half. When everyone becomes much busier than before, things like cars or wedding rings might not appeal to them as much as they used to be. Instead, Shanghai women now prefer to marry someone good at cooking delicious meals and doing other household work. As many young women born in the 1980s who got married this year said, happiness is just a simple thing to have. For them, who are all the single child in the family, finding someone willing to share household chores is much better than what wedding rings or honeyed words can mean to them.
And the survey does show that many men in Shanghai prefer doing household chores than to doing their own work. Some of them might do so in order to avoid the heavy workload, but most make the choice out of their sense of responsibility and the Chinese tradition that encourages family values.
In Shanghai, many kids spend most of the time with their fathers, and have the impression that mothers are always out for business. In this case, will it be okay to say that being a house husband has become a tradition in Shanghai?
