China has implemented family planning policy for more than 30 years, and citizens in the cities can have only one child, unless couples are only single children.   Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 18 – According to Beijing Morning News, more than 60 percent of single-child families have no intention to have a second child. Related statistics released during the 2006 Beijing Forum of Population and Development opened on December 16 show that the population in Beijing will be continuously rising in the near future. In 2010, the annual newborn population in the city is expected to reach a new high of 140 thousand.

 

Beijing Population Research Center (BPRC) launched a survey on only children aged from 20 to 36 in 57 communities in last August. The result shows that 64.1 percent of respondents are willing to have one child, although 35.9% of them hope to have more children, compared with 19.5 percent in 2002.

 

Ma Xiaohong, a scholar from BPRC, said that China has implemented family planning policy for more than 30 years, and citizens in the cities can have only one child, unless couples are only single children. An increased number of only children will get married in the first 30 years of this century. According to Ma, currently there are 2 million only children in Beijing, which means more babies will be born in the coming years.
