Chinanews, Beijing, Dec. 18 – College students afflicted with psychological diseases have become the most vulnerable group to committing suicide, the Legal Evening News reported.
The statement was made by Zhou Weiwen, a researcher from the Hebei Provincial Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. According to the researcher, college students suicidal phenomenon displays mainly four features: the proportion is higher among reputable colleges than normal colleges; female students are more likely to commit suicide than male students; female students tend to suffer from psychological depression or other mental diseases before committing suicide; and there is a higher suicidal rate among students from urban areas than students from rural areas.
She made the statement last Saturday when attending a seminar on crisis intervention measures to women in the mainland.
According to Zhou, women are more prone to accept psychological hints than men. Nowadays, it is a very common phenomenon that on campus, many female college students try to tell their fortune with the help of modern superstition methods. Female students who feel disappointed with modern society are more likely to seek mental relief from modern superstition.
In addition, female college students are more susceptible to mental frustration. They are afraid of failure and have less sense of security. All these make female students more vulnerable to committing suicide.
China is one of the few countries in the world where there is a higher suicide rate among women than men. In China, women's suicide rate is 25% higher than men.
