Chinanews, Beijing, December 12 – According to “The Survival and Development of Kids in China: Statistics and Analysis”, a report by China Children Center (CCC), at least 30 million children in China are suffering from various mental and emotional disorders.
The census in 2000 found that there were 346 million children (aged from 0 to 17) in China, taking up 22.79% of the total population. They do not only form the biggest juvenile group in the world, but also raise a great challenge to China.
A survey carried out in five provinces in China reveals that severe mental disorders like obsession, hypersensitivity and depression attack about 5.2% of high-schoolers there, and the other 77.9% suffer from some light mental and emotional problems.
“Mental disorders have cast a frightful shadow over the growth and development of kids in China these days,” said Cong Zhongxiao, vice director of CCC. “What makes things worse is that nearly none of schools in China has set up psychology courses to help them,”concluded Cong anxiously.
