Chinanews, Beijing, October 25 – More than 70,000 citizens went to rabies clinics to get vaccination against the disease in the first half of 2006, which shows that pet dogs in Beijing are in need of strict administration immediately. Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau announced on October 23 that a special operation would be carried out in the next 2 months to guarantee citizens’ safety. Anyone who interferes with the operation will be put to detention, even to criminal charge if violent means are used.
Currently there are more than 550 thousand pet dogs registered in the city, and the incidence of dog biting passers-by or even their owners has greatly increased, causing panic among Beijingers.
The great number of pet dogs also lays a heavy pressure on public sanitation, as many of their owners would not clean their droppings.
Beijing police’s focus in the operation will be on unregistered large dogs that pose greater risks.
