Wayne Rooney scored a second-half wonder goal to spark a Manchester United fight-back as Alex Ferguson’s team overturned Darren Ambrose’s first-half opener to seal a 2-1 victory against Newcastle at Old Trafford.
Rooney’s equalizer, a dipping volley from 25 yards, followed by Wes Brown’s first-ever Premiership goal moved United to within one point of second-placed Arsenal.
However, United’s victory was marred by a potentially serious ankle injury sustained by Argentinian full-back Gabriel Heinze, who was sent for x-rays after landing badly on his right ankle following an aerial challenge with Shola Ameobi.
Earlier, Manchester United cruised to the FA Cup Final with a comprehensive 4-1 semi-final victory over Newcastle.
